Green Roofs

Green Roof

Remember Carole King's song, "Up on the Roof"? You know...

When this old world starts a getting me down
And people are just too much for me to face
I'll climb way up to the top of the stairs ...

... and mow the lawn? I don't remember that?

Well, nowadays, escaping to the roof is taking on a whole new dimension with a phenomenon called "green roofs."

According to the EPA, planting vegetation over a waterproof membrane can reduce heating and cooling costs, insulate against sound, absorb pollution, reduce sewage loads and extend the life of roofing materials.

While the initial cost of construction is considerably higher than using conventional materials, over time, the savings make it cost-competitive. Plus, as demand for green roofs goes up, the price is expected to go down.

They're already a big hit in Europe. And noteworthy installations in the U.S. include the green roof at Gap Headquarters in California and Chicago's City Hall.

Maybe a green roof is right for you. The details have already been worked out. All you have to do is figure out how to get the lawnmower up there.
