ISLA EARTH RADIO SERIES E-DIGEST
April 2008

Dear Patricia,

Welcome to our April issue of the Isla Earth Radio Series e-Digest.

Puzzle Heaven. This month is a treat for all our puzzle-loving people. We have a know-it-all quiz for those addicted to the fun animated smiley faces you get when you answer the question correctly. Just click here. AND we have not one, not two, but three different jigsaw puzzles as well. These wonderful images come from Passport to Knowledge. The question, is which puzzle to start with! There's the cute seal, polar bears (note this is a difficult puzzle...lots of neutral colors), and some penguins diving into the ocean.

We hope you enjoy the eco-puzzles this month. If you have an image or puzzle idea, send it to us today!

In this issue...
  • Station Spotlight
  • Puffin Stuff
  • Water Crisis Caught On Film
  • The Worm Turns For The North Carolina Legislature
  • Saving The Wrong Fish?
  • Switch Grass Horsepower

  • Puffin Stuff
    Puffin

Volunteers with the The Audubon Seabird Restoration Program, "Down East" in Maine, have their hands full with this project. They are attempting to bring back the Puffin. It's a tough job!

    Water Crisis Caught On Film
    Film

Many areas of the country are, or will be, facing a water shortage. "The Intelligent Use of Water" film competition by Rainbird uses creative film productions to bring awareness for water conservation.

The Worm Turns For The North Carolina Legislature
    Earthworms

It's a sweet deal for a worm! These 'red wigglers' get the left-overs from the North Carolina legislature's cafeteria. And in return they provide the state piles of rich dirt.

    Saving The Wrong Fish?
    Endangered Trout

It's a story that Hollywood loves -- mistaken identity. Only this time it's real. Find out how wildlife specialists spent years breeding an endangered fish only to find out they'd been breeding the wrong one!

    Switch Grass Horsepower
    Switchgrass

Not so long ago, switchgrass provided the energy that fueled America's equine industry. Now, because it produces so much biomass that can be turned into energy, it could be used to make ethanol. Fill 'er up with ethanol made from switchgrass, please.

Save The Bay is the oldest and largest organization working exclusively to protect, restore and celebrate the San Francisco Bay. In the last year, the group has launched a Keep It Clean campaign to show residents how to reduce Bay pollution from cities and neighborhoods; collected 2000 mercury thermometers to prevent potential contamination of water; won the Excellence in Restoration Award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Restoration Center; and secured state funding for Bay Area counties to monitor Bay beaches for bacteria contamination.

Friends of the Urban Forest (FUF) is a nonprofit committed to the belief that trees are a critical element of a livable urban environment. Each year, the organization helps communities plant over 1,500 trees. Neighborhoods organize the plantings, while the organization obtains permits, removes sidewalk concrete, supplies tools and materials and selects, purchases and delivers the trees.

The Sustainable City is dedicated to achieving a sustainable future for San Francisco. Over 350 San Franciscans -- community activists and people representing many city government agencies, over 100 businesses, and academia -- gathered in working groups in 1996 to draft the "rough game-plan that is necessary for a concerted effort to achieve a sustainable society." In July, 1997, the goals and objectives of the sustainability plan became policy of the City and County of San Francisco.
