Men At Work!

The Conservancy’s Facilities Department gets down and dirty.

Thirty five years ago, Middle Ranch was a rural community, home to five families living amid grain fields; farm buildings; and horse and livestock corrals.

Today, Middle Ranch continues to be the heart of Catalina Island, and is home to the Conservancy’s small but mighty Facilities Department.

The Facilities Department consists of 11 dedicated employees under the leadership of Lenny Altherr. The Department is responsible for the maintenance of all Conservancy buildings, grounds, roads, vehicles, and equipment. All of this, and management of the bison too!

With more than 200 miles of roads, 21 housing units, more than 75 vehicles and construction equipment, plus its Middle Ranch headquarters, Airport, Nature Center at Avalon Canyon, the Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Garden; and Conservancy House, the team stays very busy.

Always on call to support the goals and projects of the entire Catalina Island Conservancy, the Facilities Department invites you to take a behind-the-scenes look at a typical day by browsing the accompanying photo gallery.
